Prudence Dlamini’s Journey to Empowerment in the Mining Industry
In a world where heavy machinery and mining have long been considered the domain of men, Prudence Dlamini has defied the odds and shattered stereotypes. Last year, in July, Dlamini was selected to participate in a training program that would change the trajectory of her life. She became one of the few women trained to operate a Trackless Mobile Machine (TMM), a role typically reserved for men.
Reflecting on her journey, Dlamini expressed her excitement about being selected for the program. “I was very happy to be one of the selected ladies who will be trained and that I’d be able to operate a TMM machine, which is mostly operated by men,” she said. This opportunity was more than just a career move for Dlamini; it was a challenge that required her to push beyond her own self-doubt and societal expectations.
“I’ve learned that I should be focused, dedicated, and committed to everything I do,” she shared. These lessons have been instrumental in her transformation, boosting her confidence significantly. “It really did change my confidence big time because I was looking down on myself, thinking I would never operate a big machine. But look at me now; I’m more confident.”
The mining industry, known for its male-dominated environment, posed initial challenges for Dlamini. She candidly described her first experience on the machine, likening it to the nerve-wracking experience of riding a bicycle for the first time. “Yes, it was hard at first being in a male-dominated industry. By the time I climbed on that machine, it was like the first day riding a bicycle. But I had dedication and confidence that I can do this. I won’t be defeated by something that I’m the one that will control,” Dlamini recalled with determination.
Her story is not just one of personal triumph but also a testament to the impact of corporate social responsibility in the mining sector. Dlamini credits her success to the comprehensive training she received at DM Minerals Group®, a company committed to empowering women and uplifting communities. “I’m happy to say that being trained at DM Minerals Group® was the best thing ever. I’m also happy to say that they didn’t only train me, but I was also absorbed by them. I’m one of them now, operating a grader,” she said with pride.
